The world is experiencing a global epidemic of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) that threatens to overwhelm healthcare systems worldwide. An under-estimated cause of poverty and a barrier to economic development, NCDs including diabetes are estimated to reduce GDP by up to 5% in many low- and middle-income countries. The evidence shows that the majority of NCDs can be prevented by addressing risk factors like unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and tobacco use. In many cases, type 2 diabetes can be prevented by maintaining a healthy weight and being physically active.
When planning your stay in Montreal don’t forget to include the IDF 5K Walk/Run on Thursday morning. Get fit and unite for diabetes.

Association spotlight – Qatar Diabetes Association
"The prevalence of diabetes in Qatar and the Arabian Gulf in general has reached epidemic proportions. Six of the Gulf region's countries occupy spots on the 10 countries with the highest prevalence in the world according to the IDF Diabetes Atlas.
The Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA) is part of the Qatar Foundation (QF) for education, science and community development, an organization headed by Her Highness Sheikha Moza the wife of the Emir of Qatar. The support and strength QDA gets from its association with QF allows it to assume a strong leadership role in the diabetes care and management field both in Qatar and the region. QDA places big emphasis on raising public awareness of diabetes, its management and prevention through programmes of education and general public information. QDA and all of the related organizations in Qatar strive to improve the health and well being of both people with diabetes and those who are at risk - to help them live a better and healthier life.
The IDF World Diabetes Congress will focus on the latest issues and ideas in diabetes and on exchanging information. The Qatar Diabetes Association is proud to be in Montreal to welcome people from all over the world who are sharing in the continuing fight against diabetes.”
Dr. Abdullah Al Hamaq (MPH, PhD)
